Outside in the dark, the rain was cementing its roots

At the heart of the blackened city

Flowed in a stream of wakefulness

I prayed three times before the chrysanthemum,

to stop the fever. . .

People were returning home late into the night

Abandoning their voice in the gutters

Slept through the empty dreams

It was the last night of June

My older sister was thinner than the scant alleys 

Memories of a rat alone on a pile of beans

As the pain slipped away down a hole at the back of the garden

Where the beeswax lamp casts its shadow

Bloomed in a leafy melody 

A bat hung in anthem from a watery sky

Pure in every drop. . .

People were returning to the spiral of a gloomy season

Moss ridden

In sad sutras

Waiting eyes by the door 

sleepless unsettled leaves

Glimmers of a teary season over the mist

in blooms of light 

The temple door closed as sleepily as Buddha’s eyes. . .

Ngoài đêm, mưa đã bắt đầu đâm rễ

Lòng phố đen

Chảy theo dòng thao thức

Tôi đã khấn ba lần trước đoá hoa cúc,

để hết cơn sốt . . .

Người đi đâu về khuya khoắt lắm

Để quên tiếng nói của mình trên máng xối

Rồi nằm mộng thấy bao điều trống rỗng

Đó là một đêm cuối tháng sáu

Chị tôi gầy hơn những con đường đói khổ

Con chuột kí ức ngồi một mình trên đống hạt đậu

Nỗi đau lách qua cái lỗ phía cuối khu vườn

Nơi đó là ngọn đèn sáp ong đang hắt bóng

Bài ca của lá bắt đầu trổ ngọn

Con dơi du ca treo mình dưới bầu trời đẫm nước

Giọt giọt trong veo . . .

Người về trên tháp mùa ủ dột

Rong rêu

Kinh buồn

Bên khung cửa ánh mắt chờ đợi

đám lá ngủ muộn

Thấp thoáng bóng mùa trỗ giọt trên những tầng sương khói

nở ra một đoá hoa đèn

Cửa chùa lim dim mắt Phật . . .

Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm, the blogger, poet, and translator, was born in 1971 in Phu Nhuan, Saigon, Vietnam. The pharmacist currently lives and works in Western Sydney, Australia.
