A poem in Vietnamese by Nguyễn Man Nhiên
Translator: Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm
Art: Nguyễn Man Nhiên

the morning passed the forest fading
a weed strewn path
home to lovers once upon a time
no one now
while I’m here watchful of the clouds
or perhaps waiting for the early light
and the cicadas at noon
the songs in patches of the forest
and a peeling wall
the shedding rows of trees
in the glory of the sunset
—
buổi sáng mờ qua rừng
con đường gồ ghề cỏ
căn nhà thủa tình nhân
không còn ai ở đó
tôi đứng nhìn mây bay
hay đứng chờ nắng sớm
và buổi trưa ve sầu
những khu rừng ca hát
và bức tường bong sơn
những hàng cây rụng lá
trong vẻ đẹp hoàng hôn

Wow! This poem is so powerfully descriptive, it’s like a photograph using words. One gets the actual feeling of being there in one’s mind.
