A poem in Vietnamese by Phan Nhiên Hạo

The baby emerges from the black stagnant water
shouting, selling false hope.
Shoe polish with a mingling of soot
hot pot with a mingling of saliva
electrical wires hanging the clouds out to dry
over the tangling misery.
Call each other via a horn and truck loads of gravel
Stuck on a one-way street.
–
Dawn steeped in a cafe alleyway
bearing the stench of rotting fish.
Behind the glass window the smearing of pizzas
foreigners in a time of integration in shorts
the garment of the backpacking district.
–
A red tendon between two muscles
spasming loosely yet tightening up
while all the needles tips broke
and there’s a hole in the ozone layer.
–
Saigon
deputised civilians
stood on one leg
hiccupping
on a multicoloured anthill.

Thành phố ổ kiến
–
Đứa bé trồi từ kinh nước đen
lê la rao bán hy vọng hão.
Xi giày trộn bồ hóng
lẩu trộn nước bọt
dây điện phơi mây
trên chằng chịt khốn cùng.
Gọi nhau tiếng tù và xe chở đá
Mắc cạn đường một chiều.
–
Bình minh ngâm trong cà phê hẻm
cam chịu cá ươn.
Sau cửa kính món pizza chẹt bẹt
ngoại quốc thời hội nhập xà lỏn
mặc cả phố ba lô.
–
Giữa hai cơ những sợi gân màu đỏ
nhùng nhằng nhưng xiết chặt
trong khi tất cả kim gãy mũi
và trời thủng ozone.
–
Sài Gòn
phó thường dân
đứng một chân
nấc cụt
trên ổ kiến nhiều màu.
