no one is drinking
the question has not changed
since last night
no cup
for the prophet
his face is wet with wine
without the sea
the night is like five black verses of poetry
describing a world acquainted with
bitterness
five verses
deep-rooted in the soil
five verses
as black as soundlessness
a calamity of this world
BÊN NGOÀI BỜ SÔNG
không có ai uống rượu
câu hỏi cũng không khác
những đêm trước
không có chén
cho vị tiên tri
rượu chảy tràn lên mặt
không có biển
đêm như năm câu thơ màu đen
tả trái đất quen
cay đắng
năm câu
đào sâu xuống đất
năm câu
thơ đen như sự câm
nỗi thống khổ của thế giới

Lê Vĩnh Tài, the poet and translator born in 1966 in Buon Ma Thuot, Daklak, Vietnam. The retired doctor is still a resident of the Western Highlands and a businessman in Buon Ma Thuot.
Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm, the blogger, poet, and translator, was born in 1971 in Phu Nhuan, Saigon, Vietnam. The pharmacist currently lives and works in Western Sydney, Australia.
