I was only halfway there and
she rang the bell
it woke me
I was out of my mind
I was exhausted
as the moment smiled she smiled
the tears would skip my mind
everything skipped my mind
I loved her more than myself
I was the lover she had in hotels
and all those other places
she knows my dreams
my fears
the load I carried
But she was oblivious to the pain
all around me
her voice echoed through the phone’s speaker
as I asked myself when she will set me free
or together we would act upon this dance at the prime time of our life
perhaps I should learn how to stop receiving her calls
stop going to the places she said she’ll be
I should have enough decency to stop loving her…

tôi vừa mới chạy đi được nửa đường
em đã đổ chuông
báo thức
tôi như người vô hồn
tôi mệt mỏi
em mỉm cười vì năm tháng cũng cười
tôi quên đi những giọt nước mắt
tôi quên tất cả
tôi yêu em nhiều hơn tôi đã từng yêu tôi
một người tình mà em có lần nhìn thấy trong khách sạn
hay đâu đó
em biết tôi mơ về điều gì
nỗi sợ hãi của tôi
những gì tôi mang theo
bên mình những tổn thương
em hầu như không biết
giọng nói của em vang qua loa điện thoại
tôi tự hỏi khi nào em sẽ để tôi ra đi
hay sẽ cùng thực hiện điệu nhảy này
vào mỗi mùa xuân của chúng ta
có lẽ tôi nên học cách ngừng nhận những cuộc gọi
ngừng chạy đến bất cứ nơi nào em nhắn
nếu tôi không đủ tử tế
để ngừng yêu em…

Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm, the blogger, poet, and translator, was born in 1971 in Phu Nhuan, Saigon, Vietnam. The pharmacist currently lives and works in Western Sydney, Australia.
