and the man I saw was me | Lê Vĩnh Tài

A poem in Vietnamese by Lê Vĩnh Tài
Translator: Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

stepping over the threshold of the doorway
looking out into the street

a man seemed to have drifted
across the city in the rain

and the man I saw was me
he veered right towards an overhanging eave

accepted a serving of steamed sticky rice pudding from a charity store
he stood there and stared at his front door
as a stranger moved in and took over his home

October 2023
