poem by Lý Đợi
translation by Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm
a husband is feverous with a stomache ache
because of how late his wife came home from fishing
seeing his young wife through the front door
clothes dishevelled, before he has a chance to ask
excitedly she announced:
honey finally, I managed to escape!
on the way home I came across a poet
he held a knife at my throat and said:
“love the poet and you’re free, fighting it means death!”
the husband distraught asked:
and! then what? what happened?
wife: I plead with him… to set me free!
he freed me three times!
