A poem in Vietnamese by Vũ Hoàng Thư
Translator: Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

with the utmost respect and sorrow my tears poured for the Palestine woman
women of the world standing on this side of the concertina wire staring at the other side
where the tanks stood growling, pointing their black gun barrel
separating husbands, fathers, children, brothers, sisters under endless ruin…
since when did the concertina, the name of a musical instrument that carries love, became the name of a barrier?
since when did music turned into hate?
why must Palestinian or Vietnamese mothers wait forever in despair?
in a homeland beyond hope?

Unfortunately, as much as many of us would love to experience less strife in our world, even my hopes in this lifetime realize that worldly conflict will never end. It all begins in the home, where generation after generation keeps handing down the hate, until it all becomes a way of life. For now, it would take an aggression from an alien world to at least unite us for a temporary commitment to unity. All we can do– as I do– is live by friendly example with our neighbors and those we come in contact with… and pray for a better world. Have a wonderful day!
