nguyễn thị phương trâm dịch trịnh công sơn “biển nhớ tên em gọi về”

your name missing from the sea calls you home
calls the soul of the weeping willow
calls the white sand in the dark
Ngày mai em đi
biển nhớ tên em gọi về
gọi hồn liễu rũ lê thê
gọi bờ cát trắng đêm khuya
Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm, the blogger, poet, and translator, was born in 1971 in Phu Nhuan, Saigon, Vietnam. The pharmacist currently lives and works in Western Sydney, Australia.

Thanks Christopher, I’ve been trying to translate that piece for years LOL, couldn’t work out how until now . So glad you approve.

This translation feels like listening rather than rendering. The sea doesn’t explain—it calls. And by keeping the language this spare, you’ve let the ache travel intact across languages.

I don’t know Livora, I just felt sad and relieved at the same time went I had finished translating the piece. Thank you for helping me see what I missed.
