A poem in Vietnamese by Thanh Tâm Tuyền

The carriage was crowded in the afternoon. The lights were on.
The engine warmed up through echoed laughter
It rained outside, outside the window. Hands firm on the cold steel poles
Strangers day after day side by side
Shy eyes catching glimpses of ruffled hair colours of the night
Glimpses of boundless rivers in lonely faraway eyes
After a long day, all you want to see is a cherished face through the warm smoke
I thought of how life quietly passes by
The accidental push and shove on the bus
Me holding tightly onto the sliding door begging for a spot to stand on the bus
Remembering my friends: one from Xóm Cỏ and the other out in Phú Thọ
To see each other we carried our hearts through these two chaotic sections of the road
The bus route operates only in the afternoon. It rained, out in the city it rained
No sign of a bus stop no stopping
Your damp shoulders clear through the blouse
(Em) your shiny silky hair cold
A new day began with the folded morning paper
The bus ran in a blurred river of constant rain left behind a hand holding on
Left between us were the unsaid words, never found
