The smell of sleep

hints of footprints long gone

the poem stuck in a draw

still a brand-new river of white brilliance

.

The white paper white pages. gosh.  the white clouds

noted the scent of contradiction(the double edged sword)

the woman flew all the way back to the beginning

I tried my best to follow to in the end to grasp at nothing

.

You wore a silver rim necklace and ankle braces

Wagering love via tiny hoop earrings

escaped I did from the scent of such forbidden fruit

hu hu. the dazzle. the lights

.

những bàn chân đã bỏ đi xa

câu thơ vẫn nằm trong kẹt tủ

còn y nguyên khoảng trắng hằng hà

Giấy trắng giấy trắng.  ồ.  mây trắng

ghi ra mùi của hương thị phi

người nữ bay về nơi khởi điểm

mình ngó theo mà chẳng thấy gì

Em mang kiềng bạc chân vòng kiềng

đánh cược tình bằng những chiếc khoen

tôi ra khỏi mùi giam trái cấm

through the gaps escapes the rhythmic yearning

drag away with it the memories

the footprints on the sand

the pits left behind by bombs in the forest

the pools full of tears

the fresh mud and devastation

Consume the essence of copper

the periodic bouts of contaminated metals

in the form of dead fish

finding each other out at sea

*

the afternoon sea and the purple rain

the swaying trees on the hill

the breathtaking steep incline

leaning, the sinking point of a star

Stepping out into the wind
it has never been so cold
thought I was used to it all void of a shiver
the exhaustion to the bone

A lifetime as a masked knight
the streets. the silenced markets. the home extensions
I’ve been out of touch for so long
the road rules now piled up at the folk of the road

Scraping off each fret on the guitar at a time
the decades of inconsequence
taking the wrong turn, too anxious to bother
about broken bones

The afternoon flipping the spoon over
the snow fall on the cups and bowls
the scattered smoke across the years abstained from smoking
the coughs as long as my walking stick

There hasn’t been a year as sad as this year
imagined the folded arms staring out at the sea
a southern hemisphere inhabitant’s summer
life giving in turns

Winter. the struggling letters, the sparse poetry
me . me. me. singing like a bell, shivering
teeth. jaw, the dramatic beat. snapping
at a verse on the other side of paradise

By the sky the clouds and wind . cuts across every alley way*
rips me apart like a human shroud
and I’m craving for the loud sobbing
the crisp laughter of the sound dark night

Tôi bước ra đường trời xé gió
chưa năm nào lạnh như năm nay
tưởng đã quen mà chưa từng biết
rụng rời. và mặt mũi chân tay

Một đời làm hiệp sĩ bịt mặt
đường phố. chợ câm. những chái nhà
thiệt lâu tôi chưa hề thông thạo
luật đi đường nhào tới ngã ba

Nghe như đàn tháo từng nút chặn
mấy mươi năm đời mình la cà
ở khoảng không lật mặt phía trái
bồi hồi chưa kịp ngắm xương da

Không dưng buổi chiều úp chiếc thìa
tuyết bắt đầu rơi trên ly cốc
khói tản mạn những năm bỏ hút
cơn ho dài như chiếc gậy khua

Chưa năm nào buồn như năm này
tưởng tượng khoanh tay nhìn ra biển
mùa hè những cư dân nam bán cầu
đời nhau vẫn luân phiên hiến tặng

Mùa đông. nốt chữ nhọc, thơ gầy
tôi . tôi. tôi. hát như rung chuông
răng. hàm, nhịp đánh tuồng. bọ cạp
phiên khúc phía bên kia thiên đường

Trời buông gió . và mây tràn mọi nẻo*
xé tôi đi như xé áo người
tôi thèm nghe tiếng khóc nức nở
và tiếng cười rộ một đêm thâu

the ungrateful cruelty of dusk
down the walkway someone’s footprints 
a pillar of society. clean hands through the rocks
discoloured scattered sound in every laden step

say forgetting be it a lighter heart
carefree. drifting like clouds, hair locks in the breeze 
standing there counting all the different coloured balloons
the hoarse drumming of deadly silence

like the inevitability of a coming storm
the godly land of blades
I don’t know and I can’t remember
how the clean slash happened to be there

our ungrateful cruelty upon dusk
a heard in a drama of inhumanity
where is the truth amongst the warp rambling souls
whose hair is touched by a touch of grime and dust

Bachelor of philosophy, and postgraduate of political science and commerce at The university of Văn Khoa Sài Gòn. 

Worked at the Ministry of Transport and Communication, a branch of the General Department of Postal Service of the Republic of Vietnam.

After 1975 worked in the Postal Office for 7 years. December 1981 settled in Montreal, Canada.

The poet’s career span from 1970 to the present day his work has been published in many literary publications. In vietnam: Văn, Chính Văn, Diễn  Ðàn, Khởi Hành, Nghiên Cứu Văn Học, Ðối Diện, Thân Hữu, Xây Dựng Nông Thôn, Ngưỡng Cửa, Nhà Văn. Outside of Vietnam: Làng Văn, Văn Học, Văn, Thế Kỷ 21, Chủ Ðề,  Sóng, Sóng Văn, Nắng Mới, Saigon Times, Hợp Lưu, Phố Văn,  Gío Văn , Canh Tân, Ði Tới, tạp chí Thơ.
