A poem in Vietnamese by Lê Vĩnh Tài Translator: Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm Photography: Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm
sadness awakened at 2 am then 4 pm 5 thirty in the afternoon and 6 forty-five in the morning
after the alarm went off ringing sadness you dab the corners of your eyes with concealer cover up the crow’s feet my sadness hiding behind a joke
a smile, a cry my sadness afraid of my happiness worried that I’m no longer sad
sadness ceasing in front of me pulling me back into darkness or did it push me into the light as though nothing is going on
when people ask “R U OK?” I would say “I’m fine” or “I’m really good at writing poetry”
so that my sadness is not exposed to anyone
my sadness unexposed as though sadness it had collapsed on the veranda or is still fast asleep at 12 noon waiting for someone to join it for a drink
my sadness is the poem I’m writing along with the tears as the door closes sadness pooled in the showerhead not that I’m a grub and I’m lazy it’s because of it’s short fuse teary temperament
my sadness unlike sadness don’t know how to walk away from sadness don’t know how to talk about sadness but don’t think it’s not sadness it’s the sadness from the beginning of time
no you won’t be able to see my sadness it’s not someone with a broken leg on crutches how could you possibly understand my sadness is like a cancer how could you possibly comprehend
not until you strip me bare squeeze and poke at the tumour beneath my skin you’ll see that the air in my lungs is full of smoke and left behind in my heart is a drop of blood
coursing through my veins like the arrow pinned on my chest
until I’m as light as a feather drifting in a breeze then you’ll see that might be me
or it might be you(em) your discard joy out of an open window I’m not here or there, darkness = joy until the moment the doors are shut and locked joy have not the fingers to turn the key in holy matrimony
follows sadness is the joy spilling through the doorway points out an escape route from sadness
I will hold onto its arms tighter than the time you held onto me — Christmas Eve, 2023 —

“will you come home so I may have something to look forward to the excitement and joy of warm human flesh”*
will you meet me at dawn to then abandon me at dusk
the warm rain is still fresh on my brow grey numbness echoes still through the clouds
you promised me nothing and I expected naught the frivolity of the moment lost weigh heavy on my ring finger
no nearer but further the distance between us
the moment I wanted to kiss your hands — January 1st, 2023 __

the poem
not poison
but candy
in flimsy silvery crinkly wrappers
you swallowed it and realised
angels were not real
you’ve wasted your life like the useless
blue birthmark on your forehead
soon you’ll be on a trip
you’re not too old
but all around you
there’s no one left
history
invariably do not welcome losers
into our faces
threw viruses and poison
the weight of a nation
+++
we live a happy life
when our husbands are sick
we live a happy life
when our fathers are dead
we live happy lives
when our children are hungry
please forgive us
forgive this glorious nation

An epic poem in Vietnamese by Lê Vĩnh Tài Translator: Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm Art: Đinh Trường Chinh [6th revision; 2019-2023]
days like these, poetry is a scar at the heart of the people
NIGHT & THE CONTINUING FALLING VERSES OF… (8)
[5th revision; 2019-2022]
days of pandemic poetry is a scar at the heart of humanity +++ days like these poetry is a scar at the heart of the people
1 A poem is burning…
a dire catastrophe
a single desire a cry a pouty smile
a heartbeat a reminder a tear shall fall
cease the evil hands orchestra releasing garbage in praise cowardly the murders indiscriminate graves homes invaded
run, run till the poem ceases
all of us by a singular hope neck dangling on a rope
2 Again there’s a lump in poetry’s throat
the drug an addiction to bitterness
unsettling to settling in the development of war the non-development of peace
traumatising eyes glistening an exhausting endless journey on squeaky rows of sleepers
poetry moving everything along on two flat wheels the paths were littered with nails impales
inability a mind lacking ability no one could avoid no one could escape
all is forgotten poetry is an outdated computer old keyboard a single beloved edition pages yellowing opening the door to a kind of system or doctrine fuzzy poetry
news of founder on a brighter cooler TV welcoming the return of the people like the return of an awkward confusing way of life
days like these poetry is the scar in the heart of the people
so edited copies of the poetry the smudging, dusty books could breathe words you could see in the whisper of the passing decades on a work table a celebration
a mausoleum a portrait flickering drifting thought in a cradle the cries of children in a pressure cooker the air barely breathable
3 Poetry
like the rolling coastline like the sudden mist rolling across a road bleeding imprints of rubber tires
poetry never uses symbols for example the mark of a bullet or a warning sign
poetry’s silently awake the entire night across a road stepping up to the challenge, confrontation the exploding of a bullet inside a chest
poetry sent from the screen accompanied by the saltiness of the sea salty, gritty in one’s hair the widow in her mourning shroud sang her hymn transcending, no
cut and run, fleeing missing bullets yet poetry could always see the blood inside each giant mechanism oozing from the chest of poetry
until the castles shakes fall break die down and sing about its grandeur
4 The constitution
poetry remembering the notes composed without lighting another firecracker for Tet again and again, it’s about the Tet offensive
the ban was etched across the sky without a squiggly line of firework left we’re all stunned, laughing awkwardly in a warm and sound Tet
yawning greetings
5 Repeating the verb 3 times: collide
we collide and break through the fragility of life
we collide and hurt within the tightness of sadness
when dreams make the heart withdraw love collides with all of our being and we… —
Three times the verb: touch
Life is so fragile if we were to touch we would break
Sadness is so oppressive to the point, we’re so touchy that it hurts
All those dreams gathered within our heart allows love to touch us all
6 Look, don’t be shy
but don’t try either befriending poetry in an uproar of pretense and congeniality
proclaiming royalty supremacy you’ll be cast out
like a used empty Starbucks takeaway cup at an opening kicked to the curb trash no one wants to recycle
a bit unrefined even after, thirty-five lectures three seminars
7 The poem
I left untouched in a pocket amongst the telephone bills
the poem I wrote since in appreciation for the inspirations and rhymes when I, my work, my masterpiece, shall claim the glory the prize & praise a place in the stock market I will read it to you much to discover here tonight sufficiently high above the sky feet wide arms outstretched
the prize like a scar right at the centre of the heart of literature …
but the poem now sit shit my printer not printing money or award and you’ll see
hence you have to sincerely congratulate me when I compose such a great poem
I will try and remember next week drop in and pretend to then forgot my wallet
remember to never ever pity poetry
8
Random coincidental concerns
the article you published about a woman defecating on a bus you’re onto a good story within the publication guidelines
people know you have nothing to hide daily activities truthful reported on every page of the paper so you’re like: a bird all beak but no mouth you’re a warrior on paper
a ride on public transport in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam more newsworthy than America bombing Iraq a woman dropping a bomb and readers must find a way to relate to thank you for the story
unfortunately, the photograph with the article was inadequate was there not enough ink to print?
I’ve learned how to spell because of you which verb would implicate anxiety? and what could be thrown out? what does immeasurable actually mean? after a burning hot meal of fire?
but it’s not a question of your integrity and stature a journalist is as good as a camel pulling a cart crossing the desert and suddenly you’re Bùi Giáng they read your work but don’t quite get you a conspiracy rolled out in a song before blaming you for being a bit cruel!
you realise that we could have gone on a ride for a few days without the need to poop we’re just products and inventory in this country as though your birds and butterflies fly without having to breathe
9
Alone
alone the people farmed the land alone the people cried autumn
the people alone in heaven and hell in both sides each day alone each night alone
alone the people hustling alone the people silent
alone the people and their friends alone the people and their family alone the people and their country
alone the people with the blood alone the people with the thoughts in their heads alone the people covered for each other
alone the people died alone the people stood up
then who could possibly be depressed? who will be at the shops, shopping?
alone the people shopped in dejection then who is alone in hell and called it living in heaven?
alone is still the only home
10
Thank you
attentively listening to the nightfall, poetry is audibly appreciative
poetry running from the kitchen mouth full of thank yous
glanced up at the sky and thanked the glass water for quenching the thirst for poetry
poetry thankful for the smile through the window the stars
poetry thankful for the hospitals for those who died only because they were old
poetry thankful for the classrooms even though there are plenty of ignorant people in this world
after the funeral, poetry thanked you for bowing down to those who have lay down
poetry also thanked the war the destruction and bloodshed must thank the police must thank the bank for buying gold to print money for poetry’s perplexing inflation an elephant calf pretending to scream when the forest was no more
poetry thankful for the truth standing tall it’s nothing at all definitely no twisting of the tongue mere wave mere thank you
11
When poetry sits in front of a screen the screen is like an open window
It asked poetry: what’s on your mind?
poetry read till the light disappear until pages of the book become a part of the darkness then poetry would turn on the light like everyday poetry would ride the motorbike at night headlights illuminating ghostly shadows waving hand, maybe?
poetry’s heart is like a birdsong a nest fell in one single slingshot poetry’s heart is like a rainbow a curve like a boat hull out at sea the day poetry tried to cross the border sunk but survived
poetry’s heart is like faraway bird wings like fish, poetry is an excellent swimmer all these things the joys life has given poetry
poetry lifts us up to then pulls us down innocent doves the day Mother was born love was in poetry’s hair wet and sticky
we pay a price for struggling in the conflicts in the name of Art confront by the burning flame of life we throw our arms in the air we tread water as we sink
poetry is without a title but poetry has a birthday today is a new age two sad birthdays three days of toiled soil and rocks
grounded is Poetry’s feet sturdier than the hooves of a ploughing ox
alive for the first time inside death a state of quiescence upon this ancient planet begin again poetry wears a mask until it is time privileged amongst entitlements overinflated Freedom Happiness thought attainable
poetry sees the light after the storm thanks to a local policeman
morality poetry steals the way people steal birthday cakes because they’re hungry for them to see and understand everything that we do anywhere poetry is plain and clear

ĐÊM VÀ NHỮNG KHÚC RỜI CỦA… (8)
những ngày này
thơ như vết thương
giữa lòng dân tộc
1
Một bài thơ cháy
tham thảm khốc
một mong muốn
một nụ cười
một tiếng kêu
như mếu
một nhịp tim
một nhắc nhớ
một giọt nước
mắt sẽ rơi
dừng lại
độc ác
cánh tay
dàn nhạc
giải toả
đống rác
tụng ca
hèn nhát
giết người
bao la
mồ mả
cái nhà
bị chiếm
chạy và chạy
cho đến khi bài thơ dừng lại
một hy vọng
treo trên cổ
sợi dây thừng
cho chúng ta
2
chiếc máy in của tôi
không phải máy in tiền hay in giấy khen
hay là thiếu mực in?
đã in tiền mua vàng
bởi anh công an khu vực

it’s all in your head
by morning
my blood will be cold
I’ll find it hard to breathe
I’ll be shivering
my lips blue
skin clammy damp with dew
I’ll try to slip from my own body
cut off a leg, a hand
turn into an Escapee
I’ll swallow a red pill
then swallow a white pill
I’ll be fast asleep when I swallow the blue pill
a conflict
forces me to fly
into clouds
I am me
once more the pouring sunlight
upon my Mother’s sky
(Mother, I’m but a broken piece

DURING ISOLATION
In a moon ray
bloomed a flower
like a dream
that night I recall
a tree in the corner of my garden was blessed
with the bloom of a moon-flower
I was animated under its shadow
a shade for the long afternoons, from dawn till dusk
like people
swinging in the trees
touched each other as they swung
but if they were to brush upon the flower, they would run
the flower sound within the tree
sound in the dark, a haunting spirit
someone
cast a spell
to release the gods within
the flower
or have they swallowed the flower whole
hence this home, this home shall burn
in a blink of an eye into a pile of ashes
hence, from within this finite body and soul
a stem of silver like the moon
bloomed the flowers and foliage that is I
spellbound by a god
now I live in fear
if I were ever to touch a flower
the spirit may escape from the flower
and would swallow all the leaves that is I
and the flower
and the home
already burning
How lonely will be the moon

winter awakening in a sad corner of the fridge bulbs of garlic sprouting bitter sprouts fingers on the keyboard typing out the lines of poetry he misses his old self dust the calling the earth moaning
–
through the breezy autumn hills and the white clouds rest simply his head on a soft pillow tuck himself in the blanket rest his back on the yellow sofa Noah’s Vessel Drifting sleep amongst the trees on an unnamed island
–
winter weeping garlic shrubs the old citadels under a blanket of white snow returns the brown starling amidst the rainy night yearning for its branches drained by all the corroding bitterness
–
winter closed doors Bocelli singing a hymn as though he’s a lonely bird in the mountains the garlic bulbs sadly perished overnight in the corner of the fridge white cathedral yellow lights candles burning
–
all he wants is rest lie down in a house full of glass panel doors and widows watch the mountains fly by upon the blessings of a prayer…

thức dậy mùa đông trong góc tủ lạnh buồn những cây tỏi đã mọc mầm cay đắng anh ngồi gõ một dòng thơ cũ kỹ nhớ mình cát bụi tiếng gọi nào đất đá than van
–
gió đã thổi từ đồi thu mây trắng anh thèm nằm xuống gối chăn mềm mại anh thèm nằm xuống đây trên chiếc sofa màu vàng con tàu noah trôi dạt đang ngủ giữa cây rừng trên hòn đảo không tên
–
