a poem by Nguyễn Thị Phương Trâm

“will you come home so I may have something to look forward to
the excitement and joy of warm human flesh”*
will you meet me at dawn
to then abandon me at dusk
the warm rain is still fresh on my brow
grey numbness echoes still through the clouds
you promised me nothing
and I expected naught
the frivolity of the moment lost
weigh heavy
on my ring finger
no nearer
but further
the distance between us
the moment
I wanted to kiss your hands
—
*THƠ LÊ VĨNH TÀI

Reading to me is rather simple, it depends on my mood:
If I wanted to face my childhood trauma,
I read Phan Nhiên Hạo’s Radio mùa hè.
If I wanted to be turned on,
I read Đoàn Duy’s translations in Early Modern English.
If I wanted a quickie,
I read Nguyễn Hưng Quốc’s 909 tercets.
If I’m feeling amorous still and wanted foreplay,
I read an epic poem by Lê Vĩnh Tài.
It’s that simple
And these are mere examples of poets who are still alive.
All you need to do to survive each day is to keep everything as simple as you like it.

With out recklessness there is no joy in stability, we learn the road to travel within our mistakes. I love this lesson. 🤗❤️

Agree …. though we are allegedly going to have some negative 25 degree (F) weather here the next few days. Real winter, none of that climate change stuff, LOL.
Also, I apologize, not sure what happened with my WordPress reader but I had not been receiving any of your posts. I believe I found a work around. I’ve missed your words and translations! ❤️

Thank you Darcy, each time I read it, I remember the light shower as I waited for my turn to climb the steps to the small plane leaving the highland in Vietnam. The rain stopped just before we had to cross the tarmac. Phew. A kind of relief that we didn’t get wet LOL.. I hope your Sunday, brings you moments of peace and joy. ❤ Trâm.

It is a true to life scene Christopher. It took two flights to meet a stranger. When I left, I was alone at the airport, with no one to send me off. I was fine until out of no where there were clouds and it rained just before we were about to cross the tarmac to ascend the small local plane at a small airport in the middle of no where. the entire scene broke me. and these were the only words that could console me. I still feel sad each time I read it. I was hoping that if I read it often enough, the pain would disappear. :))
