Viên Linh [1938-2024] grew up in Saigon. He made a living as a writer since 1962, and was the Editor-in-Chief of many weekly newspapers specializing in literature and art such as Kich Anh, Nghe Thuat, Khoi Hanh, Hong, Thoi Tap, Dan Ta… He was the Editor-in-Chief of Tien Tuyen Daily Newspaper of the General Department of Political Warfare for more than 6 years of military service, with editors Le Dinh Thach and Ha Thuong Nhan. He was discharged in 1972. March 28, 2024 the poet Viên Linh passed away at 11:11 a.m. in Virginia, USA, at the age of 86.

you touched on
the absence of us
the gone years

your presence always
in both our dreams
the first time we met
before the faithful devotion of Country
dutifully returned
to all

I should set our lives down
side by side
let them fall on our bed
so you may see
our poems
bound together in a book
more abundant than
everything we have ever imagined

cuối cùng
bạn chạm vào
sự vắng mặt
của chúng ta từ bao nhiêu năm trước

hình bóng bạn luôn luôn có
trong giấc mơ của tôi và bạn
lúc chúng ta gặp nhau lần đầu tiên
trước khi lòng sùng kính thực sự về Tổ Quốc
phải được trả lại
cho mọi người

hay là tôi để cho cuộc sống của chúng ta
nằm lại với nhau
ngả ra trên giường
và sau đó bạn đột nhiên nhận ra
là các bài thơ của chúng ta
nếu gom lại thành một cuốn sách
nó lớn hơn rất nhiều
so với những điều chúng ta từng nghĩ

Author Lê Thanh My, real name Lê Thị Thanh My, was born in 1966. She was born and raised in An Giang, with more than 30 years of working in the local literary and artistic environment. Starting to write in the early 90s, in 1992 her first work was a collection of poems. She has now published 10 books, including 8 poetry collections, 1 epic poem, 1 bilingual English-Vietnamese poetry collection, several of which have won awards. Since 2019, she has retired and is living in Ho Chi Minh City.
